Nepalis sent to Russia expecting to assist, ended up being forced to fight and perish.
Russia's push to induct foreign fighters has given rise to scams throughout the poor countries of the global south like Nepal, Myanmar and Bangladesh.
Foreign fighters are often recruited on the pretext of helping Russian families by being cooks, security guards, or cleaners.
However, after they land in Russia, they are made to fight the Ukrainian army. Ukraine too has a share of foreign fighters mostly from Western countries.
According to one estimate, almost 15000 fighters have been inducted from Nepal to fight for Russians.
"Russia has recruited as many as 15,000 Nepalis to fight its war. Many returned traumatized. Some never came back" - Cnn.com.
The majority of these fighters do not return home.
It can be conjectured that they are often killed or taken as prisoners of war and subjected to torture.
The Geneva Convention deals with laws regarding prisoners of war. According to the Geneva Convention, Prisoners of war must not be subjected to torture or medical experimentation and must be protected against acts of violence, insults, and public curiosity.
However, such international laws are hardly adhered to.
The Nepali government has banned Russian recruitment. Still, fears loom that fraudulently more Nepalis are being recruited to serve in the line of war.
