Supreme Court grants Trump partial immunity: Does this place presidents beyond the law?

Being the President of the United States is one of the most cumbersome jobs in the country.

It is essentially a 24/7 job requiring the commander-in-chief to make critical decisions and be ready for critical thinking virtually all the time.

It is given that some of these decisions would be against the popular will of the people.

But, the constitution provides immunity to the President from prosecution for the acts committed by the President during his presidency.

The question which arises is whether this immunity is above the rule of law.

In other words, can the President take the shield of immunity to protect himself even from criminal prosecution?

This was the question that the Supreme Court had to decide on Monday.

And the conservative majority of the court ruled in the affirmative.

The Supreme Court by a 6-3 majority ruled that the President enjoys immunity from criminal prosecution for his conduct in exercising 'core constitutional powers.'

This decision of the court has been welcomed by Republican supporters and essentially means that Donald Trump cannot be barred from contesting the November 2024 presidential elections.
