What is the meaning of "In the beginning was the Word" in John 1:1?

When John declares that "In the beginning was the Word," he is asserting the eternal existence of Jesus Christ as the pre-existent Son of God. The Word, or logos, has always existed with God and shares in the divine nature of God himself.
